Nations Attic Winter 2026 Diving Into History
Lot 47:
Description
This classic commercial diving helmet was manufactured by the Morse Diving Equipment Company of Boston, Massachusetts, likely during World War II. As a commercial rather than military model produced during this period, it represents a particularly desirable example. Featuring the traditional three-light (window), twelve-bolt configuration, the helmet has a large front faceplate and horizontal side windows. Morse advertised this design in its catalogs as the "Three-Light Sectional-Screw Helmet, " describing it as the most widely used diving helmet on the market.
This helmet survives in wonderful original, unrestored condition, with an outstanding working patina! Much of the original factory tinning remains on the copper body, having developed a striking dark gray appearance over the decades. Wear from the diver’s leather weight belt straps is clearly visible across both shoulders of the breastplate, while several minor working dents on top of the bonnet further reflect its years of service. These authentic details give the helmet tremendous character and visual appeal.
Remarkably, all six serial numbers match, including both neck rings and all four brails! The helmet is complete with its twelve wing nuts, original glass windows, brass window guards, internal air vents, fittings, and communications equipment. The air fitting even retains its original Morse Diving Equipment-marked non-return valve. The spring-loaded safety lock is also intact and functions correctly.
Of particular significance is the remarkably complete original diver’s communication system still housed inside the bonnet. This includes the reproducer (telephone speaker), original wiring, and even the headpiece worn by the diver. Finding these components still together inside an antique diving helmet is exceptionally uncommon and adds considerably to its collector appeal.
Despite its obvious history of commercial service, this helmet was clearly well maintained and has survived in fantastic condition. With its matching serial numbers, exceptional completeness, original communications equipment, and beautiful working patina, this is an outstanding example of a classic American Morse diving helmet. A wonderful addition to any serious private or museum collection!
