Description

We are pleased to offer, for the first time in one of our auctions, an exceptionally scarce diving helmet manufactured by Kimura Iron Works of Nagasaki, Japan. Helmets from this little-known Japanese manufacturer rarely appear on the collector market, making this an exciting opportunity to acquire an unusual piece of Japanese commercial diving history.

This impressive three-light, twelve-bolt helmet has survived in remarkably complete and well-preserved condition. Its copper body displays a beautiful, consistent green patina developed over decades, complemented by the original brass fittings and hardware. The copper remains in excellent overall condition, with only a couple of noticeable dents on the top of the bonnet.

Equally impressive is the helmet’s completeness. All four original brails and twelve wing nuts are present, along with the air and communications fittings, exhaust assembly, glass windows or ports, port guards, spitcock valve, and removable faceplate. Internally, the original air vents, exhaust valve chin button, and communications reproducers remain intact. Both the bonnet and breastplate neck rings are stamped with the matching number 2, an important detail indicating that these components belong together.

One of the most striking features of this helmet is its Kimura Iron Works brass identification plate. Rarely encountered by collectors, this beautifully executed manufacturer’s badge is practically a work of art in its own right and adds considerably to the helmet’s historical appeal.

Aside from the minor dents previously mentioned, the only other notable issue is a missing brass safety pin on the rear neck ring. Otherwise, the helmet presents beautifully, retaining the character, completeness, and appearance that collectors value so highly.

Kimura Iron Works helmets are exceptionally difficult to find, particularly in this remarkable state of preservation. With its stunning original patina, impressive manufacturer’s plate, and outstanding completeness, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a distinctive example of Japanese diving history!
