Description

This scarce Korean commercial diving helmet was manufactured by the Chang Jin Diving Equipment Company of Pusan (modern-day Busan), South Korea. Chang Jin was among Korea’s established diving equipment manufacturers, producing traditional copper and brass helmets for the commercial diving industry.

This classic three-light, twelve-bolt helmet has survived in wonderful unrestored condition. Its copper body displays an exceptional natural patina, with a striking combination of deep green oxidation and warm copper tones. The bonnet is particularly attractive, giving the helmet a fantastic vintage appearance.

The helmet retains its original external components, including the removable threaded faceplate, glass windows, protective port guards, exhaust, air elbow fitting, four brails, and twelve wing nuts. Internally, the original air vents and exhaust valve chin button remain intact. The bonnet and breastplate thread together easily, although the original neck ring gasket is missing. An old repair on the rear of the bonnet, just above the neck ring, is relatively inconspicuous and does little to detract from its appearance.

Of particular interest is the original oval brass Chang Jin identification plate, prominently displaying the manufacturer’s trademark and Pusan, Korea location.

Chang Jin diving helmets rarely appear on the collector market, especially in such appealing original condition. With its beautiful patina, complete configuration, and authentic working character, this is an excellent opportunity to acquire a distinctive piece of Korean commercial diving history!
