Nations Attic 2026 Diving Into History + More
Lot 81:
Description
Produced by the venerable A.J. Morse & Son Company of Boston, Massachusetts, this specimen carries the legacy of America’s most preeminent diving equipment manufacturer. Established in the 1830s, Morse pioneered the design of the most iconic maritime apparatus ever conceived, earning a global reputation for excellence that has endured for nearly two centuries. While the company continues its operations in Wisconsin today, its early 20th-century Boston-made helmets remain the gold standard for collectors, representing a definitive era of industrial craftsmanship and underwater exploration.Manufactured circa 1918, this distinguished diving helmet is a masterwork of early maritime engineering. Constructed with a robust copper body and original brass hardware, the piece is remarkably well-preserved. Its authenticity is verified by the matching serial number, 2571, which is stamped in all six critical locations: the bonnet and breastplate neck rings, as well as all four brails. This uniformity of numbering confirms the helmet’s structural integrity and provides a clear chronological anchor for its manufacture during the Great War era.The helmet features the quintessential "three-light" configuration, characterized by its classic round side ports and faceplate. Architecturally, the bonnet is equipped with a communications cup situated on the diver’s lower right-front, balanced by an exhaust valve on the rear right. The air fitting is centered on the back, adjacent to the communication fitting to its lower left. For operational security, the original safety latch remains intact on the rear, a vital mechanism designed to prevent the accidental separation of the bonnet from the breastplate while submerged.Presented with its brilliant copper body and original brass accents, the helmet retains the unmistakable silhouette of the classic commercial diver. This example is exceptionally complete, featuring all original glass, the four serial-numbered brails, window guards, and twelve wing nuts—notably comprising nine standard and three flanged variants. While the exhaust is missing its adjustment handle, the helmet remains functionally impressive with its original air and communication fittings. The bonnet exhibits "working dents" consistent with professional service, while subtle updates—such as the brass shelf on the front of the breastplate neck ring and the repositioned communications cup—attest to its life as a trusted tool that evolved alongside advancing technology. This is a wonderful example of a commercial model that was both rigorously used and expertly maintained throughout the golden age of diving. The display stand in the photos is not included.
