Nations Attic Winter 2026 Diving Into History
Lot 54:
Description
This is not only a legendary United States Navy Mark V diving helmet, but the far rarer helium or mixed-gas version developed for extreme deep-diving operations. Instantly recognizable by the massive brass CO? absorbent canister mounted to the back, these helmets represent one of the most specialized and visually impressive forms of the Mark V ever produced. The absorbent material inside the canister could become extremely dangerous if contaminated with seawater, helping earn this formidable helmet its ominous nickname among Navy divers: "The Widow Maker."
Manufactured by Diving Equipment & Supply Company (DESCO) in June 1970, this helmet survives in remarkably original condition. Its serial number, #71, is clearly stamped on the identification plate and is repeated on the interior breastplate and bonnet neck ring. Even the rear CO? canister bears the number 71 on one of its fittings, making this an exceptionally desirable full serial-number-matching helium Mark V.
Equally impressive is its completeness. The helmet retains its four brails, eight of twelve wing nuts, window guards, original glass, air, heat, gas, and communications fittings, fitting caps, specialized helium exhaust valve, non-return valve, dumbbell safety latch with original chain and cotter pin, and brass hardware. Internally, the air vents, exhaust-valve chin button, neck-ring gasket, and WWII-era Navy-inspected reproducer remain intact. The large rear CO? absorbent canister is also exceptionally complete, retaining its original filter screen and rubber gaskets.
Perhaps most striking is the helmet’s finish. U.S. Navy Mark V helmets were tinned to protect their copper bodies from saltwater corrosion, and this example retains essentially 100% of its original tinning. Combined with its matching components and exceptional degree of originality, the result is a helmet with tremendous historical and visual presence.
Weighing approximately 101 pounds, the helium Mark V was a massive piece of equipment created for some of the most demanding diving work of its era. More than half a century after this example was manufactured, its scale, complexity, and unmistakable appearance remain extraordinary. Whether displayed as the centerpiece of an advanced diving collection or appreciated simply as an exceptional piece of U.S. Navy engineering, serial #71 is a rare and remarkably original survivor of the deep-diving era.
