Nations Attic Winter 2026 Diving Into History
Lot 53:
Description
The U.S. Navy Mark V is arguably the most iconic diving helmet ever produced. Introduced in 1916, its unmistakable design and long service history have made it highly desirable among collectors worldwide. This example was manufactured by DESCO of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a legendary American diving equipment manufacturer that became a U.S. Navy supplier during World War II and remarkably remains in business today!
According to its original identification plate, **this Mark V was manufactured in September 1977 and bears serial number 161.** The matching serial number is also stamped into the interior bonnet neck ring.
What makes this helmet particularly interesting is its documented history with Divers Academy, a commercial diving school responsible for training generations of professional divers. The school’s name is etched directly into the breastplate, with additional light etchings visible on the bonnet and brails. These markings are part of the helmet’s working history and add considerable character to this well-traveled example.
Used for training commercial divers well into the 21st century, this Mark V was eventually retired from active service and is now being offered for sale for the first time. Its copper body retains much of its original tinning, which has developed a wonderful dark patina over the decades. The brass hardware displays an equally attractive, warm aged finish.
The helmet retains an impressive assortment of original and period components, including all four brails, twelve wing nuts, four copper brail shims, spitcock valve, exhaust valve and chin button, non-return valve, internal communications elbow plug, retrofitted dumbbell safety latch, neck-ring gasket, glass windows, and internal air vents. Also present is a World War II-era Guided Radio Corporation communications reproducer bearing a U.S. Navy inspection stamp.
This is a helmet with genuine working history and tremendous character! While not a pristine museum example, its decades of service training commercial divers make it especially appealing. For many students at Divers Academy, this very helmet may have provided their first experience diving in the legendary Mark V.
Now retired after decades of service, this matching-number DESCO Mark V offers collectors a wonderful opportunity to acquire an authentic American diving helmet with a fascinating history, attractive aged patina, and a direct connection to the training of professional commercial divers.
