Nations Attic Winter 2026 Diving Into History
Lot 31:
Description
For your consideration is a beautiful, early and original Japanese diving helmet manufactured by the **TOA Diving Equipment Company Ltd. of Tokyo, Japan.** This impressive helmet features the classic three-light (window), 12-bolt configuration and has developed a wonderful, authentic patina from decades of age and use.
The history of TOA dates to 1909, when the company was established in Minamisenji, Japan. In 1924, Kintaro Sano organized the business as a limited company, producing a wide range of commercial diving equipment. By 1944, the company had adopted the name TOA Diving Equipment Company Ltd. and soon came under the control of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. Despite a relatively small workforce of approximately 50 men and women, TOA grew to become one of Japan’s leading manufacturers of diving equipment.
This particular helmet is an outstanding example of TOA’s craftsmanship. The original brass manufacturer’s identification plate remains securely attached and reads TOKYO MINAMISENJI, TOA, DIVING EQUIPMENT COMPANY LTD. All the original hardware, glass windows, and air fittings remain intact.
Overall, the helmet is in wonderful original, used condition. The bonnet and breastplate thread together easily, although the neck ring gasket is absent. The faceplate threads on and off with ease as well. Remarkably, the copper body has survived virtually free of notable dents or damage, something seldom encountered on Japanese diving helmets that often endured decades of demanding commercial service. The spitcock handle is currently stuck in the raised position. Areas of green verdigris are present on the breastplate and portions of the bonnet, evidence of saltwater exposure many years ago. These deposits contribute to the helmet’s authentic, untouched appearance.
While well-used Japanese diving helmets occasionally surface on the collector market, finding an early TOA example in such exceptional original condition is a much greater challenge. With its beautiful patina, complete original fittings, and remarkably well-preserved copper body, this is a terrific example of historic Japanese diving equipment and an excellent addition to any serious collection!
