Nations Attic Winter 2026 Diving Into History
Lot 16:
Description
This exceptionally scarce Snead Style 4 shallow water diving helmet represents the final and most distinctive design produced by the Snead Company of Jersey City, New Jersey. Manufactured circa 1930s, the Style 4 was the only Snead model constructed of cast bronze rather than cast iron, making it particularly desirable among collectors of historic diving equipment.
Unlike traditional deep-sea helmets, Snead helmets were designed for shallow water work without requiring a complete diving suit. The Style 4 was cast in one piece and features a rectangular viewing window similar to the earlier Style 3, an integral carrying handle, and an air inlet positioned at the upper rear. Weighing an impressive 71 pounds, this bronze model was reportedly considered excessively heavy by divers who used it.
The front features the manufacturer’s identification cast directly into the bronze: "SNEAD. CO. / JERSEY. CITY. N.J. / PAT. PENDING." Below is the original distributor’s identification plate for the E.J. Willis Company of New York, specialists in marine equipment.
This outstanding example survives in excellent original condition, retaining its naturally aged bronze finish with attractive patina and minor surface wear consistent with its age. The rectangular viewing window and surrounding frame remain intact, and the helmet displays beautifully throughout.
The Snead Style 4 is an exceptionally difficult variation to acquire. Its unusual bronze construction, impressive weight, original distributor’s plate, and remarkable state of preservation make this a highly desirable addition to any serious collection of antique diving equipment.
