Description

This unique and seldom seen helmet was made by Diving Equipment & Supply Company (DESCO). Located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this company would start making diving helmets and related equipment in the 1930s. The company’s initial goal was to make equipment that would allow for the dive of shipwrecks at extreme depths. When World War 2 started, the company would receive large government contracts to produce most notably the US Navy Mark V helmet. In 1945 as the war was coming to an end, Jack Browne set a world record of a depth of 550 feet of water. The company would go on to design and manufacture numerous specialized diving helmets for both military and commercial applications. DESCO is still in business today, serving active divers and collectors. One such helmet that DESCO still makes today is the model 29211, the Lightweight Abalone helmet. Originally designed for superior use while harvesting abalone, these helmets have over the years served as valuable tools in other underwater work. This attractive vintage example features serial #1034 on the original ID plate. Just above the ID plate, engraved into the copper is A. Chisholm & Broman Divers. This is also etched into the bonnet communications cup. With some research its possible to find out where this company operated and when, adding to the story of this helmet. The helmet itself retains a wonderful vintage look with hints of past work. The bonnet and breastplate neck rings are both stamped D.T.I. A VIII, indicating the two halves are original to each other. Both halves are threaded together correctly, and the old neck ring gasket is intact. The helmet is complete both inside and out. Over the years the exhaust valve was moved farther back on the bonnet along with a few other modifications, likely done when this helmet was no longer involved with abalone work. The top bonnet does have typical working dents, but none are severe or distract from the helmet’s impressive visual appearance. This piece is a great example of a helmet evolving over time to meet the requirements of different jobs over its working life. The display stand in the photos is not included. The option to purchase the stand at a discounted price will be available after the auction. All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic.
