The US Navy Mark V is arguably the most iconic helmet design in history, serving as a cornerstone of maritime heritage and a pinnacle for collectors. Produced from 1916 through the mid-1980s, production peaked during the World Wars. While four companies manufactured the Mark V, Miller-Dunn of Miami, Florida, produced them only from 1943 to 1944. With an output of only a little over one thousand units, Miller-Dunn examples are exceptionally rare and highly coveted. The company’s established relationship with the Navy began in 1916 with their "Divinhood" shallow-water models, a pedigree that eventually secured their brief but historic Mark V contract.This specific helmet was manufactured on February 1, 1944. Per government specifications, the lead ID plate is stamped with the production date and serial number 118. While Miller-Dunn’s lead plates are often found illegible due to the soft material, this one remains remarkably clear. Also found on the ID plate is a rarely seen US Navy inspection stamp in the lower-left corner. This “overlapping USN” style stamp was used by Naval supply offices for equipment that did not have an inspector at the manufacturing site, such as Miller Dunn. This is only the second inspection stamped Miller Dunn Mark V we have ever handled, and the first in this style!Also of significance is the helmet’s relatively early serial number, 118. This number can be found on the lead ID plate and on the bottom side of all four brails. Interestingly, the two inner neck rings are not stamped. Inconsistencies with serial number stamping are common with early Miller Dunn Mark V’s. The helmet is in very nice original overall condition. Externally, much of the helmet’s factory-applied tinning remains intact, preserving its original WWII-era appearance. The original glass with red lead caulk, port guards, brass screws, BTE exhaust valve, spitcock valve, communications and air elbows, elbow fitting caps, twelve correct wing nuts, four serial numbers matching brails, four copper brail shims, dumbbell safety latch with locking lever, and cotter pin with chain (pin and chain are old replacements) are all intact. The interior remains extremely well-preserved, featuring original air vents, tinning, and an exhaust chin button. An old neck ring gasket is present. The threads of the two neck ring halves require a patient to engage. Mark V helmets are arguably the most desirable diving helmets to collect in the world. The WW2 Miller Dunn examples are at the top of the most difficult examples to find, and also a prime investment, especially in this one’s condition! The display stand in the photos is not included. The option to purchase the stand at a discounted price will be available after the auction. All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet.
