Nations Attic Winter 2026 Diving Into History
Lot 64:
Description
Featured in the 1917 A.J. Morse catalog, this exceptionally rare spring-lock diving knife represents one of the most unusual American diving knife designs ever produced. Unlike traditional screw-pattern sheaths, its innovative spring-loaded mechanism allowed divers to withdraw the blade quickly and easily. Despite this advantage, the design apparently saw very limited production, making surviving examples extraordinarily difficult to find.
The knife features a distinctive flat brass handle with a trigger button along its edge. Pressing the button releases an internal locking hook, allowing the blade to slide freely from its brass sheath. Two flathead screws secure the trigger assembly, which remains fully functional. The knife and sheath weigh a substantial 2 pounds, 14 ounces.
This example survives in very good original condition, displaying a wonderful age-related patina. The factory-capped brass sheath features a fantastic patina that should be expected from a tool of this age. The blade retains a consistent patina and has been well preserved.
Although unmarked by a manufacturer, this distinctive design is documented in the 1917 A.J. Morse catalog. An exceptionally scarce and historically significant American diving knife that would be a remarkable addition to any advanced collection!
