Nations Attic 2026 Diving Into History + More
Lot 115:
Description
“Anything Underwater, Around The Clock, Around The World!” This bold declaration, etched directly into the brass, serves as the introduction to a truly singular piece of maritime history. Custom-built by Walter Daspit for the renowned diver Don Inman during the 1960s, this helmet is one of only approximately six ever produced, three of which were commissioned by Inman himself. Departing from industry-standard copper, Daspit utilized heavy brass to create an eclectic and highly innovative design that prioritized versatility in demanding commercial environments. The result is a rugged, purpose-built tool that stands as a testament to mid-century diving ingenuity. The technical configuration of the helmet is a visual and functional marvel, featuring a generous bonnet paired with a specialized breastplate. Its sophisticated equipment suite includes four fixed viewports, a Mark V-style exhaust, a Hays water heater valve snorkel, and a Swindell air control valve. Internally, the helmet remains fully outfitted for deep-sea work, containing dual communication speakers, a US Divers 250-foot depth gauge, and a second-stage regulator specifically utilized for mixed-gas dives. A standout feature is the original "breather bag" co-designed by Inman and John Galletti for buoyancy and air volume control, which is secured to the breastplate via its unique eight-bolt system and distinctive hardware. This lot is further distinguished by its exceptional documentation and vivid personal history. It is accompanied by its original transportation case, hand-decorated with artwork that reflects Inman’s career and his "Four Aces" CB radio persona. Inside the case, a wealth of provenance remains, including original dive operations sheets, Inman Marine Divers decal and patch, and a McDermott Diving folder. Most significantly, the archive includes a copy of an original photograph capturing this exact helmet after it was on a job being used by Don Inman. Presented in its original, unaltered condition, the helmet bears the honest dents and character of a life spent working around the globe, making it a premier acquisition for any serious collector of professional diving heritage. All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept in a permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity. All items will be shipped with a signature required upon delivery and full insurance either via FedEx or the USPS Priority Mail.
