Description

One of the most desirable and rare American diving helmets is the five-bolt pattern manufactured by the A.J. Morse & Son company of Boston, Massachusetts. Often referred to as the US Navy Mark 1, this style was utilized by both the Navy and commercial divers throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, predating the introduction of the iconic Mark V in 1916. Because most helmets in the Navy’s inventory were retrofitted into threaded styles after 1916, surviving original five-bolt examples are exceptionally rare. This specific model is distinguished by its unique construction, where the bonnet and breastplate are secured by five large bolts at the neck ring rather than the traditional threaded design favored by later models. This rare surviving example, Serial Number 1643, was manufactured circa 1912. Its rarity is further enhanced by the fact that it is a full serial number matching piece; the number is clearly stamped on both the bonnet and breastplate neck rings, as well as on all four intact original brails. The helmet boasts a remarkable provenance, having been owned by a family-operated marine hardware and ship chandler’s company in San Francisco, California. It remained within the family’s ownership for over a century until being consigned to us in 2026. This helmet is being offered alongside other historical items from the same business, including original A.J. Morse and Schrader catalogs from the 1930s and the company that owned this helmet, their catalog found in Lot #104.Presented in its original, as-found condition, the helmet displays the unmistakable, deep brown patina characteristic of a copper and brass hat exceeding 110 years of age. All five neck ring bolts are intact, with only one wing nut missing, and the four factory-matched brails are present, secured by four original and three later replacement nuts. The brass hardware on the bonnet remains remarkably complete, featuring the communications and air elbows, communications cap, exhaust valve, window guards, and communication cup. All glass is present and free of notable cracks or chips, and the faceplate threads effortlessly, indicating a well-preserved mechanical state. While the helmet is in good original condition, it does show minor evidence of its long working life. There are no significant dents on the top of the bonnet, though the areas surrounding the air fitting and exhaust are pushed in slightly. Internally, the air vents are intact, though one has slightly separated from the bonnet wall. The exhaust body on the rear is loose but remains attached by the internal chin button. Notably, the helmet underwent a period-correct modification likely within a decade of its manufacture, where the original communication fitting was patched and replaced with a larger fitting, one used by the Mark V, adding a layer of authentic operational history to the piece. The helmet retains its original A.J. Morse & Son Inc. oval brass ID plate, which remains easily legible alongside the stamped serial numbers in all six locations. Other original features, such as the bonnet eyelets and breastplate studs, remain perfectly preserved. Given its impressive original patina, this helmet is a prime candidate for display exactly as it was found. The few missing components could be fabricated by Morse, now located in Wisconsin. A full sympathetic restoration could also be undertaken. Regardless of the path chosen by its next owner, this imposing and historically significant helmet represents a premier opportunity to acquire a true treasure of American maritime history. The display stand in the photos is not included.
