Description
Arguably the most desirable and collected diving helmet in the world, the United States Navy Mark V. This example features an ID plate showing it was made on November 9th, 1929, by A. Schrader’s Son Inc. Schrader was one of the original two companies to manufacture the Mark V for the US Navy, starting in 1917. Schrader would land numerous contracts during World Wars 1 and 2 to produce the Mark V. Mark V helmets, in between the United States’ involvement in World Wars I and II, are very scarce.
Above the original Schrader ID plate is also an original United States Navy property plate. These tags are also quite scarce and seldom seen on helmets. This tag shows the helmet was 000351 in the USN inventory. The breastplate neck ring features serial number 1249B. The bonnet neck ring is stamped 4108 on the inside and outside.
This helmet or its accumulated parts does have a fascinating history. During the late 1960, the helmet’s previous owner was a USN diver stationed at the Washington, D.C., Navy Yard. During this time, the Navy was disposing of used-up Mark V helmets by simply tossing them into the Potomac River! The young diver wanted a Mark V badly, so at night he and a buddy would dive the Potomac and retrieve any Mark V parts they could find. The result of his efforts is this helmet!
This helmet, with a date putting it manufacturer at the very beginning of the Great Stock Market Crash, features the following: original BTE exhaust valve (not attached), spitcock valve, port guards, glass, faceplate, air fitting elbow, safety latch chain, breastplate studs. There are a few holes in the body of the bonnet, likely done by the Navy, practicing on removing and installing components. The key to this helmet charm is its backstory, and the two rare ID plates it features. The next owner can restore this helmet back to its original glory or retain it as it is, there’s no wrong answer.
While the helmet is nowhere near complete, it did serve as a proud reminder of his service. The helmet also features a very rare ID and USN plate, making it all the more special. If you are looking for a more economical Mark V or one you can restore, this in combination with its story that we will pass along on the helmets’ COA make it a unique opportunity.
All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.
