Nation's Attic Diving Into History Auction 2025 + More
Lot 61:
Description
The US Navy Standard Diving Knife, a historically significant and highly desirable piece associated with the Mark V diving helmet, was manufactured by several contractors during World War II. In many instances, these knives were not marked with the maker’s name. Of the knives that were stamped by a manufacturer, one of the most difficult and desirable made was by Union Cutlery, aka the Ka-Bar.
Union Cutlery of Olean, New York, a company with a present-day reputation for superior knife craftsmanship, distinguished its production with its company name. Although renowned for their knives supplied to the US Marine Corps, Union Cutlery also produced a KA-BAR specifically intended for US Navy divers. The limited production volume under these government contracts renders the Union Cutlery KA-BAR US Navy Standard Diving Knife a particularly rare and coveted item for collectors specializing in knives, diving equipment, and World War II militaria.
Since World War 2, this example has retained the original Cosmoline grease applied to it to preserve the blade! Under the old brown grease, the stainless-steel blade is likely to appear just like it did when it came out of the Olean, NY factory. The base of the blade has the Union Cutlery stamp on one side and KA-BAR on the other. The blade is still sharp, and all the teeth are intact. The wood handle is in excellent condition with a great patina. While this knife was likely never used, it does feature some honest character that, in our opinion, adds to its appeal.
