Description
During World War 2 the standard US Navy shallow water diving helmet was the Divinhood Style 3. These helmets have a classic appearance and were popular to use even after the war. The Divinhood Style 3 would be the last model Miller Dunn would make, going out of business after WWII. This model is also the pinnacle of shallow water helmet design. Its large front window and oval top window were easy to look out of and work with. The helmet fit nicely and was made so the head could easily tilt back inside the helmet – nice for working on ship bottoms!
This great looking example features a brilliantly polished copper body with just a hint of patina to it. This helmet was professionally polished around 20 years ago. The helmet does have the original front and back lead weights with brass hardware. The original glass on the helmet is all present with no cracks. Typical minimal working dents are evident upon close inspection.
This helmet does feature a rarely seen detail worth noting. The brass ID plate used at the factory was one made initially for a Style 2 helmet. With brass in short supply during World War II, Miller Dunn was using everything it had in the shop, including old ID plates. Evidence of this can be seen where the “3” is stamped into the plate. This interesting and seldom-seen variation adds another layer of unique appeal to this helmet, in our opinion.
All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.
