Nation's Attic Diving Into History Auction 2025 + More
Lot 108:
Description
This helmet was made by the Morse Diving Equipment Company, located in Boston, MA. This company started making diving helmets and related equipment in the mid-19th Century and continues to do so in the 21st Century. Their helmets are quintessential pieces of American industrial design and iconic diving history.
This helmet’s design and the time it was constructed could be considered the pinnacle of copper and brass commercial helmet construction. This four light (windows or ports) twelve bolt helmet was made by Morse during the late 1950s or early 1960s. During this time, a revolutionary change in diving helmet design was taking place using fiberglass and other materials. This classic Morse helmet embodies the look and function of an iconic design that, during the late 1960s, was on the decline.
The helmet features the traditional horizontal side ports with the optional fourth port on the top. The large threaded faceplate provided superior visibility for the diver. The helmet also features a BTE exhaust, communications cup, standard air fitting with a Morse non-return valve, spring-loaded safety pin, and a unique communications elbow and fitting. Inside the bonnet, the air vents, exhaust chin button, and old communication wire are still intact.
The breastplate features a seldom-seen lead oval ID plate, which is still in very good condition. All of the helmets’ original glass is present with no cracks. The neck ring gasket is intact and the two halves of the helmet thread together easily. Typical working dents associated with normal use are present on the top of the bonnet.
This helmet features a nice rich consistent patina to its copper body and brass hardware, giving it wonderful vintage appearance. If you are considering a classic commercial diving helmet, this would make an excellent choice.
All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.
