Description

This is a classic piece of American diving history represented in this A.J. Morse & Son Inc. helmet. This configuration of three ports or lights and 12 breastplate bolts was called “The Most Popular Helmet In Use” in multiple A.J. Morse & Son catalogs. AJ Morse is one of the most iconic helmet manufacturers in the United States. Located in Boston, MA, when this helmet was made, this company is still in business today.

The helmet features serial number 3172 on both neck rings and all four brails. This serial number helps date the helmet to the 1930s, during The Great Depression. This time was also when the government was funding lots of pubic works projects, which included the need for commercial divers.

As mentioned earlier, this helmet is a full serial numbers matching example. The helmet is complete with its four brails, twelve wing nuts, port guards, glass, neck ring, and faceplate gaskets, exhaust valve, communications fittings, air fitting, dumbbell safety latch, internal air vents, and exhaust chin button.

The top of the bonnet features numerous small working dents consistent with a helmet that was used, but cared for. The round side ports on this Morse helmet give it a classic look not always found.

All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.
