This is a very unique and innovative diving helmet made by Safety Sea Systems located in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, called the Helmax. The Helmax is a clam shell stainless steel and fiberglass mask / helmet with a hinge at the top. This specific helmet is a model SS-20B, which indicates the mask is stainless steel. Other models utilized a fiberglass mask.

This example appears complete and is in very good used condition. The neck dam is in good shape, the hinge mechanism works smoothly. The Krypton lamp and other factory hardware are still intact. There is a number 71 on the back of the fiberglass shell.

The Helmax, along with other diving helmets from the 1970s that came out of Louisiana, represent one of the most innovative regions and periods in diving design that will surely be appreciated by collectors and historians long into the future.

This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity. The display stand shown in the photos is not included.
