Nation's Attic 2024 Diving Into History
Lot 176:
During World War 2 there were eight different companies that made and applied their names on US Navy diving knives. Examples from some of these companies are very difficult to find for a variety of reasons. One company that is extremely difficult to find examples from is A. Schrader’s Son. While this company supplied a large number of Mark V helmets and other components, contracts for knives were nearly non-existent for them. This is actually the first Schrader US Navy knife we have ever handled!
This knife is very good original condition with signs of war time use. The brass sheath features A. Schrader’s Son stamped towards the top. Numerous small nicks and marks are present on the sheath. The wood handle shows only superficial signs of age, no cracks. The blade shows slight hints of age like small spotting, but overall appears to have been only lightly used. When this knife was found the blade was covered in old Cosmoline. There is still Cosmoline inside the sheath.
