Nation's Attic Diving Into History 2023
Lot 85:
Presented is one of the nicest World War 2 Japanese diving helmets we have handled. With the aid of Google translation software and further assistance from a notable collector and diving historian, this helmet was made by Nippon Sensui Kabushiki Kaisha in 1944! The information is stamped into the front brails, which we have included close up photos of.
With this helmet being made at the end of World War 2 in Japan, it somehow escaped in this incredible condition. The helmet is the classic three light twelve bolt configuration favored by Japanese divers. The factory applied tinning is still present as well as the glass, port guards, threaded faceplate, brails, wing nuts, brail shims, spitcock valve, exhaust, air elbow with check valve, safety pin with original rope, internal air vents, and exhaust chin button.
There is what appears to be a serial number stamped into the faceplate frame, 6359. It is likely this is a Japanese government serial number. The top of the bonnet is in excellent condition with only a few shallow dents, possibly from use or handling over the years. This helmet could arguably be considered new old stock and one of the few surviving examples made during World War 2 in this type of condition!
All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity. The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one after the auction will be provided.
All items will be shipped with a signature required upon delivery and full insurance either via FedEx or the USPS Priority Mail. Worldwide shipping is available; however, no ocean freight will be offered on large items. DHL Express is an option for international shipments under 600 pounds via air. Payment via bank wire for customers outside the USA is required. A shipping quote prior to the auction can be provided by emailing your postal code.
