Direct from Tokyo Japan is this classic helmet made by the TOA Diving Apparatus Company. This classic 3 light 12 bolt model is a very nice example. Today, collectors and divers enjoy the classic style, rugged construction, and mystique these helmets have.

This piece of diving history was likely made during the first half of the 20th Century. The helmet has a copper body with brass hardware, all of which is present. The helmet is missing the ID plate. Most helmets made by TOA are this very configuration: 3 light (windows) 12 bolts. The bonnet and breastplate thread together in a traditional fashion. The front faceplate threads off, the two side windows are fixed.

This helmet has certainly been on a number of adventures during its working life. A unique aspect of this one is the copper reinforcement on the top of the bonnet. This helmet was a vital tool to the diver and everything was done to keep it working. This reinforcement adds a unique visual aspect to the helmet that is not often seen. If you have been considering a classic helmet used in the Pacific, this one would be a good choice. TOA has been in business since the early 20th Century and produced quality helmets and related gear. During World War II the Imperial Navy took over the company, utilizing their facility and employees to make equipment. Surviving the war, the company thrived in producing helmets for a country where diving is an integral part of its culture and economy.

All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity. The display stand shown in the photos is not included.
