Description

This is an outstanding example of the considerably scarcer Soviet 3-bolt/12-bolt combination diving helmet! Manufactured in 1983 at Factory 21 in Leningrad, Soviet Union, this unusual helmet represents an interesting development in Russian diving equipment. The original brass identification plate confirms its 1983 manufacturing date.

The helmet displays a beautiful, naturally aged patina across its copper body and brass hardware. All the correct fittings are present, including the window frames, brails, wing nuts, exhaust valve, air inlet, and communications fitting. The copper body remains in excellent condition, with no significant dents or damage. The bonnet and breastplate fit together easily, and the large rubber neck-ring gasket is intact.

What makes this helmet particularly interesting is its versatile design, allowing it to accommodate two different diving dresses. It could be used with the traditional Russian 3-bolt diving dress or the 12-bolt configuration more commonly associated with Western diving equipment. This dual-purpose design offered greater flexibility but also required more complex manufacturing, likely contributing to its relative scarcity today.

An excellent example of Cold War-era Soviet diving technology, this distinctive helmet would have been extremely difficult for Western collectors to acquire during its years of active service. Today, it represents a wonderful opportunity to add a less commonly encountered Russian diving helmet to any serious collection!
