Lot 214:
Description
This exceptionally rare 19th-century Italian combination pistol represents a pinnacle of bespoke firearms engineering, seamlessly blending precision rifling with the devastating utility of a blunderbuss. Measuring 12.5 inches in overall length, this impressive sidearm features a unique over-under configuration consisting of two 6.5-inch barrels. The upper barrel is rifled to approximately 14mm (.55 caliber) for long-range accuracy, while the lower "duckbill" barrel features a dramatic flare—measuring 40mm wide by 25mm tall—designed to provide a wide horizontal shot pattern. The artistry of the piece is highlighted by exquisite gold calligraphy; the name "A. Maiano" is inlaid along the top barrel, while "Calabresi" adorns the lower blunderbuss barrel. These names are further repeated in gold on both sides of the frame, accompanied by the gold-inlaid numerals "1" and "23" on the respective barrels. The steel furniture is heavily embellished with ornamental engravings, lending the pistol a regal and commanding presence.Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the pistol remains in excellent mechanical condition. The dual-hammer percussion system functions flawlessly, with both hammers holding securely in the safe and fire positions, and both the front and rear triggers remain crisp. The stock is expertly carved and features a functional trapdoor compartment in the butt, historically used for the storage of spare percussion caps. Hefty, mechanically sound, and visually striking, this dual-barrel curiosity is a museum-grade display piece for any serious collector of European arms. All items will be shipped with a signature required upon delivery and full insurance either via FedEx or the USPS Priority Mail.
