Description

The Yokohama Diving Apparatus Co. Ltd. stands as the preeminent name in Japanese maritime history, renowned for over a century of peerless craftsmanship and engineering. Among their prestigious lineage, this specific model is celebrated as one of the most visually striking and technically sophisticated helmets ever produced. Originally marketed as one of the firm’s most premium offerings, it was engineered specifically for the rigors of extreme deep-sea exploration. Representing the absolute pinnacle of copper and brass mixed-gas apparatus, this helmet is a rare masterwork of design, coveted by elite collectors for its storied legacy and unparalleled construction.Looking directly at the front of the helmet, it is very similar to other helmets made by Yokohama and DESCO of the time period, the 1960s. With a quick glance around the back, then all the magic becomes apparent! This helmet has incorporated into the back a compartment housing a canister containing a Co2 absorbent. Various plumbing and fittings are also part of the backside and front of the helmet, giving it an appearance unlike any other helmet! This helmet undoubtedly was used for numerous extreme deep diving jobs. Due to their original expense, the hazardous environments in which they operated, and diver safety, these helmets were generally always well maintained and taken care of.The helmet does have a series of letters on both next rings, which do match. The original Yokohama brass ID plate is still intact. The brails or straps, 12 wing nuts, four brails, four brail shims, four threaded acrylic windows, internal tubing, valves, and spring-loaded safety latch are all present! This helmet’s exotic appearance, completeness, and fantastic patina make it one of the most popular helmets for collectors. Their original expense, limited production, functionality, and worldwide use have also made them highly sought-after treasures. This example is certainly worthy of any museum or private collection! The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one after the auction will be provided. All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet.
