Nations Attic 2026 Diving Into History + More
Lot 78:
Description
This interesting piece of diving history is a one-of-a-kind diving helmet with a compelling provenance. Originally discovered decades ago, the helmet began as a standard Japanese three-light, twelve-bolt model before it was transformed by the legendary Bob Kirby. The modification was commissioned by veteran diver Bob Wick during a collaborative project in California, resulting in the distinctive and highly functional "square front port" design seen today. Kirby’s craftsmanship is evident in the oversized front port, engineered to provide the diver with a significantly wider field of vision, and the addition of a front-mounted backup air fitting for a bailout bottle.Beyond its custom geometry, the helmet was meticulously adapted with repairs and fittings to ensure compatibility with American diving equipment. It has since aged into a visual masterpiece, boasting a rich, authentic green patina that underscores its decades of history. Remarkably well-preserved, the helmet remains in complete condition; all four brails, twelve wing nuts, copper brail shims, glass, and internal components—including the bonnet air channel pipe, reproducer, and exhaust button—are present and intact. While this helmet does not bear a formal Kirby nameplate, its silhouette and technical modifications serve as a definitive showcase of his signature ingenuity and skill. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a visually stunning centerpiece that represents a unique bridge between traditional Asian manufacturing and bespoke American engineering. It is a true conversation piece that is certain to be the highlight of any collection. The display stand shown in the photos is not included. The option to purchase one after the auction will be provided. All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet.
