Nations Attic 2026 Diving Into History + More
Lot 74:
Description
This is one of the notable and visually unique diving helmets ever produced. Made by the Yokohama Company in Japan, this was one of their most popular and expensive helmets ever produced! Used by divers worldwide for extreme deep diving, typically for the oil industry. This helmet is unique in that it was owned and used originally by International Divers Inc. in Santa Barbara, CA. It is serial number H04 as indicated by its ID plate. Similar-shaped brass ID plates were also used on early Kirby Morgan helmets. Looking directly at the front of the helmet, it is very similar to others made by Yokohama during the 1960s. With a quick glance around the back, all the magic appears! Incorporated into the back a compartment housing a canister containing a Co2 absorbent. Various plumbing and fittings are also part of the backside and front of the helmet, giving it an appearance unlike any other helmet made before or after. This helmet was well maintained and currently only exhibits minor superficial surface imperfections. It should be noted that the breastplate features the International Divers serial number H04. The bonnet, stamped on a communications cup, is stamped H03. The two halves thread together with ease and have likely been together for decades. The bonnet and breastplate also have the letters CDC etched into them. After its time at International Divers, the hat was sold to Ocean Corporation, a diving school in Houston, TX, where it played a central role in shaping the careers of emerging commercial divers. After its working life, it was transitioned from the training tank to a prominent display in the school’s lobby, serving as an inspiration to students for years. This history will be documented on the included Certificate of Authenticity provided to the winning bidder. All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity. All items will be shipped with a signature required upon delivery and full insurance either via FedEx or the USPS Priority Mail.
