It is very seldom that we have the opportunity to offer a classic diving helmet that was presented to a diver at his retirement. For your consideration is this seldom seen Diving Equipment & Supply Company (DESCO) Abalone model diving helmet. Specifically referred to as the model 29211, this is a 4 light 12 bolt (4 windows and twelve studs on the breastplate) helmet.While the helmet’s original DESCO ID plate has been removed, another brass plate was put in its place. The plate is engraved: PRESENTED TO RAY SPILLER IN APPRECIATION FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE AND UNDAUNTED SPIRIT DIVCON US INC AUGUST 1969. This helmet undoubtedly was a very special memento from this career.The helmet does retain its original serial number of 1065 on both the bonnet and breastplate neck rings. This number dates the helmet to late 1945 or early 1946. While the helmet has received some professional modifications, it does appear exactly as it did when its working life ended and was presented as a retirement gift in 1969. The bonnet and breastplate thread together as they should with the neck ring gasket intact. All major components are also intact on this helmet including the air piping in the bonnet. This helmet’s provenance and authentic “been on the job” appearance really make it a special piece. Unlike helmets made for the military, these helmets, made for a specific job, were made in very low numbers. With a bit more research, maybe more information on the diver or DIVCON’s use of this helmet could be obtained! The display stand in the photos is not included. The option to purchase the stand at a discounted price will be available after the auction. All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept on permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity.All items will be shipped with a signature required upon delivery and full insurance either via FedEx or the USPS Priority Mail.
