Description

In the 21st Century, diving helmets made by Joe Savoie have been recognized among historians and collectors as one of the most revolutionary helmet designs ever. The fact that each of these helmets was handmade in Joe’s Louisiana backyard only adds to their mystique and allure. Savoie did not advertise his helmets; they were sold by word of mouth once divers witnessed one in action. Savoie would make approximately 100 helmets using fiberglass motorcycle helmets ordered out of an auto parts catalog. Later on, Savoie would then handmake the helmets using a stainless steel shell. Today, each helmet Joe made is one of a kind in its own way, with some helmets featuring unique characteristics. This helmet is the 49th stainless steel model Joe made. The stainless steel body shows normal signs of use, but no large or visually distracting dents or blemishes. Both externally and internally, the helmet features most of its original components and hardware. The neck dam assembly fits into place and locks in with ease. If desired, the metal body could be lightly polished to restore this helmet to its original shine. TOC (The Ocean Corporation) is stamped into the lower front of the helmet. Savoie helmets are and will be one of the most coveted pieces of underwater exploration ever made.Carrying a distinguished history of service, this helmet was owned by The Ocean Corporation, where it played a central role in shaping the careers of emerging commercial divers. After its working life, it was transitioned from the training tank to a prominent display in the school’s lobby, serving as an inspiration to students for years. This history will be documented on the included Certificate of Authenticity provided to the winning bidder. All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept in a permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity. All items will be shipped with a signature required upon delivery and full insurance either via FedEx or the USPS Priority Mail.
