Nations Attic 2026 Diving Into History + More
Lot 45:
Description
Own a legendary piece of subsea engineering: an early Bob Ratcliffe-designed Dual Port Rat Hat, a design so significant it was a staple of the Ocean Development Corporation (ODC) before the design became an exclusive tool for Oceaneering divers. This specific model is the notably rarer dual-port variant, featuring the "extremely simple, fool-proof" neck ring assembly and large, unbreakable polycarbonate ports that defined high-performance visibility in its era. While the standard Rat Hat is a collector’s staple, the Dual Port remains a much harder-to-find gem, representing the peak of Ratcliffe’s early ODC innovation. This particular helmet carries a storied pedigree, having been used at the Ocean Corporation during the 1970s. It is presented in its original, "as found" condition, featuring an impressive vintage custom paint job that wears its history with pride. The numerous signs of use and honest wear from decades past only add to its mid-century allure, making it a truly one-of-a-kind maritime artifact. Please review all photos to appreciate the unique character and condition of this rare survivor—you likely won’t see another one with this much personality anytime soon.Carrying a distinguished history of service, this helmet was owned by The Ocean Corporation, where it played a central role in shaping the careers of emerging commercial divers. After its working life, it was transitioned from the training tank to a prominent display in the school’s lobby, serving as an inspiration to students for years. This history will be documented on the included Certificate of Authenticity provided to the winning bidder. All diving helmets in this auction will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Nations Attic. The certificate will have a unique number that will match the number on a tamperproof hologram decal placed inside the helmet. This information will be kept in a permanent file at Nations Attic and help ensure the provenance of the helmet and authenticity. All items will be shipped with a signature required upon delivery and full insurance either via FedEx or the USPS Priority Mail. Worldwide shipping is available; however, no ocean freight will be offered on large items. Payment via bank wire for customers outside the USA is required.
